We call it patriotism. I'm sure you'd feel the same way if we said something about where ever you are from.

Their education system brainwashes most children into having a very narrow world view. They are taught to compete on a State v. State basis accepting triumph and loss only at that level, the concept that they are the ultimate power and that they will never be surpassed is so deeply ingrained that they cannot bear to compete internationally in, (for example) real Football, losing is uncontemptible so they are afraid to try too hard at anything they might lose.
All in all I don't know if The British Empire, Rome or the Greeks were any less ethnocentric; losing is harder and there's always more to lose as long as you're top dog.

Rather a broad generalization! But in reality, Yanks tend to be fairly patriotic espcially after the events of 9/11. On the other hand maybe you've just hung out with the uptight ones....
