I'd like to know what type of water most people give their baby to drink, whether it be to mix with formula or to drink on its own. My doctor says to give him tap water, but I'm not so sure, then others say that bottle water should not be given either... Any opinions?

as long as your tap water is safe for you to drink then its safe for babies to drink. i have given my son tap water since the day he was born, hes now 14 months old and doing great.

if your tap water in your area isn't good...your dr. would probably mention that. you can give bottled water if you want to spend that extra money. your tap water probably won't hurt. but, how old is the baby? at first, the baby gets all the water they need from the formula. more and you could actually be doing harm. it's a bit much for brand new kidneys to handle. plus, the baby might not get enough formula if he/she is filling up on water. especially at first when you're feeding him/her around every 3 hours. my son is 8 months, he started drinking other stuff, water/juice a couple of months ago. any way...tap water for me.

Depends on the age of the baby - but 12months or under should have tap water that has been boiled once and allowed to cool. This sterilises nasty bugs out of it. Bottled water may have too high a mineral content, and repeatedly boiling water concentrates mineral salts in it - hence the boil it once only.

If breast fed they don't need anything else to drink since breast milk acts as food and water. If formula feeding, you may want to offer cooled boiled water between feeds, or if they;re still grumpy just after a feed.

I'm pretty sure babies are supposed to be at least a year old before getting water on its own at all (they get the hydration they need from milk or or formula), since their systems aren't ready to handle the electrolyte imbalance it could be dangerous. If the baby is sick and dehydrating, I think they can have Pedialyte under doctors' instructions. After a year, probably whichever water you drink (if you have nasty tap water and wouldn't drink it yourself, I wouldn't give it to the baby).

When I mixed it with formula, I boiled tap water. I didnt give plain water until after she was weaned from formula and then I gave her filtered water from the tap. Nobody should drink plain tap water.

You can check your local health department to see if the tap water is safe to drink. Where I am, it is not, so we had to give him filtered bottled water. If it is safe, then tap water is good becasue most communities add flouride to the water. You can also get the brand Nursery Water that has added flouride. Also make sure the place you are living in does not have lead pipes, which can put dangerous metal deposits in your water, making it very unsafe.

For my baby's bottles, I used tap water and boiled it first. Now she is 2 yrs., I just give her plain tap water, same as I drink.

When she was still taking some formula we used Nursery Water (bottled). Now that she is older we give her water from the tap that has gone thru our PUR water filter.
