Tap water is good because it has Fluoride, but if the water in your area is not good for drinking you should use bottled water with fluoride added. They usually sell this in "Baby"section of food stores. The fluoride is needed to build strong, healthy, cavity free teeth in babies.
Depending upon the age of your child you may want to limit the amount of water so that the child does not get filled up on water instead of milk/formula.
If your child is already drinking various liquids water is better than drinks high in sugar such as juices (also stay away from caffeine).

Some people use bottled water, there is a special water for baby called nursery water you can find it at wal mart it comes in a pink gallon jug. Tap water will do just fine it's all what will make you feel the most comfortable. It seems to me this is like do i let my kid sleep in a hand-me-down crib or do i buy all new? It depends on the parent but either one is just as good.

Depends how old.
If you're breast feeding and its an infant then no water is needed. Water can fill up the tummy and make the kid vomit or just be too full to eat healthy breast milk.
I give my 9 month old filtered tap water. I have an on tap Brita filter. I don't know if it does anything but I like the taste of it better than reg. tap water so I feel better giving it to him.

The reason your doctor is telling you tap water; is the same reason your dentist would too; fluoride. It is essential for teeth. But, most people will say not to give tap to babies under 12 months of age; because of the impurities in the water. There are pros and cons to this!

Take a sample of your tap water to a water treatment plant or find a company in the phone book that tests water; and have your water tested for impurities. In the meantime, several grocery stores sell VERY inexpensive (less than a dollar per gallon) water called "Nursery Water". It is drinking water that hasn't been completely stripped of its natural mineral capacity - so it is safe for your baby's delicate system. The tap water in my area is full of chlorine and when it rains . . . has traces of rust in it. I have invested in a Pure system . . . it cost a good amount for the unit (which attaches to my faucet) but overall it was worth it - having clean water for my family. I understand your worry - have your water tested, it may be up to par.

Bottled water that has been processed through Reverse Osmosis. Reverse osmosis is the process of pushing a solution through a filter that traps the solute on one side and allows the pure solvent to be obtained from the other side...
Look on the label of the bottled water.... it will say whether or not it's been filtered or if it is just Purified Spring Water.

i always used distilled because our tap water in cali not so great. some doctors say to use tap water because of the flouride in it (which) helps grow healthy teeth and flouride is removed when it is distilled. Tap water isn't bad mostly bad tasting!!! So i would ask another pediatrician their opinion. Be careful if your supplementing flouride it can be dangerous to an infant always ask the doctor what kind of bottled water they would reccomend if it has flouride added to it.

It depends on where you live. I lived in a place where the tap water was hard and awful. The tap water had white flakes floating in it, it was lime and calcium floating in the water and it tasted awful and made me cough because the white flakes stuck in my throat. So I had to give my kid water that I bought at the store. But if you live in a place where the tap water is actually good tasting, then yes..give your kid the tap water!
