I do not know of a way for you to accurately tell if you broke your toe or not. But a big "sprain" or "rupture" can swell up and hurt quite a bit. The hard part is that it is on a part of your body that you actually use regularly, so unless you totally NOT use it for a while (meaning confine to sitting position), it will definately take you a while to feel better.
Now, if you did break or fracture your toe, seeing a doctor is recommended. Sure they cannot really do anything, but you would like to make sure no bone fragments are there. If it is a hairline fracture in your bone, that's ok, but if bones snapped and there are fragments left, you may need some more advanced care. They will just keep you inflamed on your toe and cause pain.
At least this is what I think...but then again, I live in Canada so I can go to the doctor easily.

Probably broke it for if just bruised even badly pain would be gone-the advantage of going to a doctor is they can cast and immobilize the toe so it has a chance to heal by not being used. By not immobilizing it-there is movement, pressure put on it every time you walk or move your foot and you'll continue hurting, you can also cause the break to get worse-more pain and as long as you are using this toe it will not have a chance to heal for you may be re-breaking it all the time sign being that when you move too much it hurts like a b***ch. You may not like to but I'd go to Emaergency Room where they will X_RAY will also have computr that magnifie the X-Ray where even the thinnest break can be seen, and if broken will immobilize toe and give you pain medication. If not broken will tll you what to do and what not to do, may immobilize-don't know and give you pain medication and anti-inflammatory medication. Right now to reduce the swelling pack the toe in ice or put icepack on it-the blue bag that you keep in the freezer if you have one is great for can just about wrap around toe---the ice reduces swelling which will reduce some of the pain-take exedrin-the aspirin will reduce inflammation-Tylenol doesn't do it or me -but may for you and wrap the toe -ace bandage if you have one-if not a wet cold piece of gauze wrap several times for object is to protect toe and by wrapping help it to not move apply ice until swelling goes down-It Will. Good Luck but also go see Emergency Room at nearest Hospital or else you'll suffer for a very long time and the break (if it is) may not heal right-may then heal deformed and give you probnlems the rest of your life and then the only way to correct is to rebreak.

Just use first aid tape to tape it to the next toe beside it as a splint so it will heal right. You might've just fractured it, if not broken it. All the doctor can do is take an x-ray to see if it's fractured of broken, but after that there's nothing else he/she can do. Just keep it taped and take any painkiller if you need it. Also, avoid using sandals or open-toed shoes. Wear tennis shoes.

Probably. You should tape it to the next toe. It will eventually stop hurting. Take some ibuprofen.
There's nothing the Dr could do for you now.

A broken toe doesn't really matter like a broken foot. It isn't essential to go to a doctor but if I can you should. You might have severe bruising

There's not really much you can do about it. Yes it's probably broken.
One thing to do, always wear shoes to protect it. It seems that when I broke mine, I was constantly bumping it on something which was extremely painful. Just be careful walking.

Here's the deal! If you broke it and you don't get medical attention now, plan on suffering for a long time when arthritis sets in!
