According to the sales charts, it would be Marvel. Thanks to Civil War, Marvel is ahead in sales and popularity. Look at the movies that has come from each company in the last few years. Superman Returns didn't break the $200 million mark like Batman did, while X-Men 3 easily beat both. Don't even get me started on Spider-Man either.

Although both DC Comics and Marvel Comics are very, very popular throughout the world, I think that Marvel Comics is more popular than DC Comics because of the blockbuster movie franchises SPIDER-MAN & X-MEN.

For a long time, Marvel was winning, and by all accounts, still is to a degree. But ever since DC's Infinite Crisis storyline and the One Year Later jump, they've been gaining popularity rather quickly.

DC has better story arcs and strong character development, infact the stories are at times too complex for some lay readers to wrap their heads around. I've always preferred DC but I don't mind a collaboration here and there.
For most people though Marvel wins the popularity contest.
