Read the book. I assume you are having to read it for school because if you were reading it for fun then you wouldn't have asked because either you'd want to find out yourself or you wouldn't care. So do your work.

I believe he is adopted by his benefactor after it is revealed who he is by his locket which had a portrait of his mother in it.
