If you are not too picky about which software you use (like a gamer) a Mac is often a better choice no matter what you want to use it for. The main advantages that PC's have had over Macs are price of hardware and availability of software. It is harder to program for a Mac so there are less companies that do it.

A Mac on average will run faster, crash less, run smoother and last longer then a Windows based PC. You can get many of the same software applications for a Mac as you can for PC, you just have to look harder for it. MS office documents can transfer between PC's and Mac just fine. Photos, emails, websites and many other normal aspects of computer use are identical between PC and Mac. You'll even find many things easier to do on a Mac. Anything art related is easier and faster due to the nature of the Mac market share (mostly aimed at web developers and artists, there are therefore more art program options). The Mac OS is built to be smoother and more streamlined, it also has more features while using less disk space then Windows OS.

Now for the bad. If you ever decide to upgrade your Mac you need to use only Mac parts. They use proprietary hardware which is expensive. Also if you swap OS versions your old Mac software may no longer work. Programs in the Mac world typically only run on one or two version of the Mac OS and anything older or newer wont run. So when you upgrade the oS you may need to upgrade some other applications as well. Now usually this isn't a real problem, for one thing you don't really need to upgrade a Mac. I ran the same 24 Mhz Mac with OS 5 for over 10 years with no problems and it still ran faster then my 1 Ghz PC when it finally died due to power supply failure. Secondly, if you do need an upgrade, some companies provide these for free with proof of purchase of the old version while other companies offer upgrades of their older software for very cheap.

So, if you're a gamer a Mac is NOT for you. If you really are attached to one piece of software you want to use or are on a tight budget, a Mac is NOT for you. Anyone else can use a Mac and should like the experience. They are much easier then Windows and much easier on your stress level. Imagine never loosing your work to a blue screen of death again, or never having a mysterious glitch crash your system. That's what a Mac is like.

HI there...a PC convert would find a Mac quite user friendly. Email can be sent and viewed in HTML, rich text format just like our Windows friends...surfing the Web is not much different either. The advantage the Macs have is that if you needed to use a Windows application you can install Apple's Boot Camp to install Windows XP2. You then have the best of both worlds!

Pretty much everything on the internet for the PC is also for the Mac. Websites, internet email, etc. should all work the same.

Plus if there is something that doesn't work for you, or if you end up not liking OS X (not likely) then you can also buy and install windows because the new Macs run on hardware that is completely compatable with Windows.

I've had both.
To me, the only reason NOT to have a Mac is due to compatible software applications. Windows are running a few years behind Macs on OS. But, I no longer own a Mac due to the applications used in my jobs. If you're in the computing 'game' for fun, not for work, get a Mac and have peace of mind.
