I have a compacq computer with windows 98. I was wanting to know if anyone had any ideas on speeding it up? I tryed to defrag it, but I had it on defrag for 2 days and still wasn't at 1%. Any other suggestions?

Defragging on large hard disks almost always take a long time especially when done for the very first time. To reduce the defragging time, I'd suggest removing junk programs and data FIRST so the computer would need to move less files around. Also, make sure you don't have any disk errors by running chkdsk/f on the start>run box first. If you have a program that checks and/or optimizes the registry, I'd run that also since program installation and uninstallation over time may have slowed your comp down a lot.

If you're willing to spend a little, upgrading your RAM and/or HD would be the best bet. If you're not willing to spend at all, the above would be your best option, barring a full re-install.

If defrag takes that long you might have a very full hard drive.
Try to remove programs you don't use anymore and make sure to clear out all you temp internet files and cookies too. Windows has a default where it allocate around 10% of you hard drive for temp internet files. After you remove these try defrag again.
If that does not work maybe time for a new machine. A machine running Win 98 must be pretty old and Microsoft does not even support that OS any more. Good luck.

buy new parts?
Thats about it. dont think you can do anything else.
The best thing to do is format your computer and take all the crap out of it.
If the defraging is taking so long, like 2 days, then yeah, yo may have a processor leak somewhere. Best thing is to buy new parts.
