Can there really be any serious doubt that this was anything but a response from the Council to pressure from from the Blair camp? The probable answer is "No there is not", the only alternative I can think of is that maybe the Leader of the Council is looking for a knighthood in the resignation honours and that system is so corrupt he could actually get one.

Its a tricky question to answer. I'm from Manchester I know the square that they're talking about, which is Albert Square and its on the doorstep of the hotels and conference venue that is being used. As the authorities are erecting a 'ring of steel' around this area of the city centre there will be less routs in and out of the area than usual. Also, consider the estimated 25,000 protesters that are going to be in the area when the conference is on. In my opinion having so many people in one small area with a field of tents is asking for trouble, it doesn't sound safe to me.

Also, Manchester city council have a history of banning certain events, sometimes unjustifiably so, but in this instance I think that they have sided with common sense.

(It should be noted that Manchester city council is a labour council and would obviously have a favourable bias towards their own party. Again though, I think this ruling with regards to health and safety is justified.)

Probably not Tony Blair - bizarrely he's not that stupid! However some of the morons that run the Labour Party at the moment are! If you are looking for someone to blame try the Party's General Secretary, Peter Watt. Also, expect the decision to be reversed within a week!

Bliar, probably. I'll never forget one conference what some old chap started to have a go at him, Tony babbled on saying ' your entitled to have your opinions, sir, just be grateful you live in a society where you are free to express them!' - and he was saying this AS the goons were dragging the poor chap out! The irony completely escaped him!

Manchester City Council must be one of the most incompetent loony left council in the country. This is the kind of stunt that I wouldn't put past them. Like all left wing organisations, they hate any form of criticism. You only have to walk around the city and wonder where all the local tax money is going. You can approach the centre from the 4 points of the compass, and it is full of derelict buildings and bomb sites from the last war. It is a dirty, overrated slum of a city. My advice, STAY AWAY.

Whether it came from the council directly or after input from Blair's office doesn't really matter. It's just another symptom of the way the country has gone since Blair took power. Unfortunately I don't see any credible opposition.

definately tony blair. at the end of the day we all know he was wrong with the war in iraq and he only joined in so he could score points with bush, and he doesnt want any sort of protest coz he's still pretending he was right, and he's scared of the truth.

I don't claim to understand what goes on in peoples minds so... fairness? Who knows? People do sometimes have a tendency to be duplicitous.
Suggestion: If you don't believe your government, change it.

Well, if it's in the Daily Mail, it must be true...
