I think these are red blood cells, the are long and thin so that they can go through veins.

without further information, i would guess that a long thin cell could be a nerve cell - it has a cell body where the nucleus etc is found, and very long thin processes called axons that transmit the nervous impulse from the cell body in the brain all the way to the toes (in a motor neurone)!
As for cells that can shorten, my guess would be muscle cells which are composed of two proteins called actin and myosin which are contractile, thus when stimulated by the above motor neurone, the myosin contracts, sliding over the actin filament and the whole muscle shortens.
Hope this helps.
(red blood cells are round, concave and can be squeezed)

The best thing to do is look in your book or remember what was said in class because there are a number of cells that can fit either of your descriptions.
For example, muscle, nerve, or sperm cells are long and thin, and the cells you use to see with in your eye or the cells that line your bladder both shorten themselves normally every day.

the long and thin cells transmit information throughout your body using electrical and chemical signals. They also signal to your cells which can shorten, thus allowing you to move (run, write your homework, breathe). There are many cells which can shorten attached to each other, so while each one shortens only a tiny bit, all together shorten a considerable amount.

You should be able to figure out what the name of those cells are from those hints.

NEURONS or the NERVE CELLS are very very thin as well as the longest cell within the body.

MUCCLES CELLS have the ability to stretch and contract more as compared to other cells.

I thinks you have got your answers correctly. OK !

Whatever you do, don't put red blood cells as your long and thin answer. They are round and flat.
