Deion is probably the most overrated cornerback of all time. He had two skills, the speed to stay with any receiver and good enough hands to hold on to an interception when he guessed right. Otherwise he was a terrible defender and a tackling dummy was more likely to make a tackle than he was. Teams didn't avoid him because he was so good, they took advantage of his teammates who gave the receivers more room. Teams which ran and threw at Deion always had success. He had the good fortune to play when big plays were repeated over and over. So people remember his big returns not his barely mediocre overall play.
Any conversation of greatest cornerbacks must include Mel Blount because he was so dominant the league changed the rules and then he adjusted and continued to dominate. Also guys like Dick Lane, Herb Adderley, Jack Butler, Rod Woodson, Dick LeBeau, Mike Haynes and several others would be candidates for "best".

Compare his stats with that of Rod Woodson over his career. Hard to not put Woodson over Deion. People do it all the time but the stats dont lie. Ill even throw some of the bigs ones out there
Deion Int's: 53
Woodson Int's 71
Deion Tak (definetly not his strong suit): 419
Woodson Tak: 969
Deion sack: 1
Woodson sack: 13.5
Deion TD (not ST): 9
Woodson TD (not ST): 12
Deion pass deflections: 123
Woodson pass deflections: 250
Type in "deion sanders stats" and "rod woodson stats" on yahoo search and compare for yourself.

And some people think the Earth is flat!! But they'd BOTH be wrong! Sanders was a terrible cover man, that didn't like contact, was horrible against the run, could only cover by giving a huge cushion. If he couldn't get a pic, he was pathetic. Rod Woodson was head & shoulders above him, just to name one.

Deion was like the Rolling Stones of DB's..... if he calls himself the greatest corner ever like the Stones call themselves the greatest R&R band ever, he figures people will eventually believe it. And many people mistakenly do, I believe. Lester Hayes, Rod Woodson, Mel(s) Blount & Renfro (and a bunch I don't even remember) were all better corners. Deion was all hype b/c he was fast. Teams were afraid to throw to his side of the field for that reason so he was successful in that regard. But there were MANY better corners in the annuls of NFL history.
Peace~

Deion was far from being the best.
Mel Blount, Mel Renfro, Ken Houston among many others were far better than Deion ever hoped of being.

Can you name a better corner than him? I can't. But I heard him say on TV that DeAngelo Hall for the Atlanta Falcons is as good as him so...
