See remittance from UK to india is vey easy. There are three prominent methods. I will discuss in detail.

1. Western Union:
This is instant and very secure. It does not require the reciever to have a bank account in particular bank. Although reciever will need a well recognised Identity proof and this could be passport no/ Driving Licence/ration card/pan no/Voter ID card/Photo Credit card.

You go to Western Union centre and fill the form and give the reciever identity no (oe of the above mentioned items). Say you transfer 500 GBP you will have to cough 500 plus service charge that will not be more than 20 GBP(Pound). Once you complete the formality tell the reciever in India to go to any Western Union centre all over across the India along with the same identity card which you will mention in the form during remittance. The agent of Western Union will lock the transaction and after furnishing the same ID details the agent will give exact amount of money which you have transferred. If the amount is more than 50000 rs, the reciever will get a cheque. If the amount is less than 50000 rs the reciever will get hard cash. It is simple and trustworthy. The ideal agents are banks , post office, some prominent fiancial service etc in every city.

2. Wire Transfer:
The reciever must have a bank account in a bank. If reciever has a bank account in private bank(ICICI, HDFC, UTI, Etc.) then only you can go for wire transfer otherwise skip this. You will need the swift address, agent bank detail(name and account no, if any). Every Indian bank has an agent bank in UK and US. You will have to fill the wire transfer form with following details.
Intermediary bank name/address/account no.,routing no/swift adress.
2. Beneficiaryname (reciever in India), his/her bank name, address, account no/swift adress, routing no. Once you complete it the money will be transfreerd within 48 hours. But it happens only in case of private bank otherwise in PSU bank you never know what will happen.

3 Cheque:
Draw a cheque in favour of reciever in india and post it. Once he/she recieve it, will put into the account and as the cheque is from abroad they need one month clearing(you should forget this option).

4Draft
draw a draft in favour of beneficiary name in Indian currency. The drawee bank will issue yopu a draft payable at their agent bank in Indi and it is also cumbersome.

5Online payment
There are some prominent online portals which will take money from you and will handover the same amount in form of draft the reciever within 48hours anywhere in India ,however check the details of cities on their website.

This option is also good.
Deatils of some prominent websites are mentioned below.
http://www.hdfcbank.com/NRI/remittances/default.htm
http://www.icicibank.com/Pfsuser/icicibank/ibank-nri/nrinewversion/m2i.htm
http://www.timesofmoney.com/remittance/jsp/wireTransfer.jsp
www.CitiNRI.com

The above mentioned websites are secured and highly recommended. They are not cheats as all are leading bankers and one is Times of India newspaper which is big one and also deals in this.

Hope I have answerd your question and will help to clear your doubts. I would suggest Western Union or last method wie transfer.

However secure transaction is also guranteed in wire transfer method provided the reciever has a Private retail bank account.

Kind regards,
Abhishek ,New Delhi.

Safest way to send money to India is through your local bank if the recipient also has a bank account
Your bank will probably charge you a commission but its worth it.
I certainly would not trust a web site company with my money unless they are part of a well known high street bank.
Hope this helps.
