I think you mean the wampus cat. Cattywampus means that something is crooked or off balance.
The wampus cat is a southern (Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia) legend, and there are several variations. One version says that the wampus cat is a Cherokee woman who, for various reasons, wears a catskin coat or mask. Another version says that it's a witch who could transform herself into a cat, but got stuck halfway forever.
The wampus cat is supposed to be about 6 feet tall and able to kill its victim just by sneaking up behind it and screaming. It walks on its hind legs, and it's noted for its huge green eyes. It splits its time between the mountains and the river bottoms.
