Not a chance in hell. You won't get a cardboard box under a fire-escape for that kind of money in that area.

I used to go to Imperial College, it's across the road. During the summer you could try getting a room at the halls of residence there but I don't think that they would be available really. Other than that you are probably screwed.
I lived in Bayswater across the park to the north and near Earls court though I am not gay or Australian, ten years ago the prices were ridiculous 400 pcm on collingham road for half a bedroom, surely more now.
try Imperial college's accommodation service, just leg it if they find out you are not a student. you will be up against some tough competition as term starts in October. Ask at the Royal College of Music as well.
Why the hell do you want to live there anyway? it's too expensive.

HAHAHAHAHAH!
Oh, you were being serious....
Why does it need to be walking distance anyway?? The tube is easy enough with the tube spitting distance from the Hall, then at least you can find somewhere a little bit nearer to the price bracket....which I think you might need to raise slightly unless you dont mind the scary parts of London....

The real question is 'How far can you walk?' you'd need to be capable of at least 20 miles a day to manage that.... if that's a possibility, try Brixton or Stockwell....
