You need to consider the real reasons behind the space ambitions. Whoever controls the space around the earth controls the earth. Laser weapons deployed into orbit around the earth can strike any target on the earth using mirrors to guide the beam.
Public attention is now being guided towads space exploration with Mars and the idea of being first to put a man on Mars. This captures the public imagination and keeps the public spending on the space program justifiable.
The real question is who will be the first to get laser technology into orbit around the earth. Once it is deployed, there will be a quick change in heart about space exploration to visit other planets. Ofter all, man landed on the Moon over 30 years ago, and hasn't been back in all that time! What's the point?
