the amount of money you spend in tuition

The main difference between a private and public college is the main source of funding. Public schools are primarily governmental funded (state and/or local), while private schools get their funds mostly from outside "private" sources that are non-governmental in nature.

A community college is a 2 year college, as opposed to a 4 year. It's also sometimes called Junior College. And a city college is simply an inner-urban school.

That's the basic definitions, but in terms of things like tuition, private colleges tend to be more expensive than public institutions like community colleges.

Tuition-that is true.
Community colleges:In Canada and the United States, a community college, sometimes called a technical college, county college, junior college or a city college, is an educational institution providing higher education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and Associate's degrees. The name derives from the fact that community colleges primarily attract and accept students from the local community, and are often supported by the local community through property taxes
Private college:Private schools, or independent schools, are schools not administered by local, state, or national government, which retain the right to select their student body and are funded in whole or in part by charging their students tuition rather than with public (state) funds. In the United Kingdom and some other Commonwealth countries the use of the term is generally restricted to primary and secondary educational levels: it is almost never used of universities or other tertiary institutions
The City College of The City University of New York (known more commonly as City College of New York or simply City College, CCNY, or colloquially as City) is a senior college of the City University of New York, in New York City. It is also the oldest of City University's twenty institutions of higher learning. City College's thirty-five acre campus along Convent Avenue from 131st Street to 141st Street is on a hill overlooking Harlem; its neo-Gothic campus was mostly designed by George Browne Post, and many of its buildings are landmarks.

CCNY is the flagship campus of the CUNY public university system[1] and the first free public institution of higher education in the United States.[2]

In the UK, the terms are slightly different to those previously mentioned in the previous responses.

A Private college is exactly that! I.e. It is self-funding (mainly by charging its students full tuition fees etc or donations from 'bigwigs') and generally more selective than other colleges (because it can be).

A City college is exactly that! A college in a city. E.g London. It's also genereally funded by the government through the Learning and skills council (LSC). These colleges are less selective than private colleges and only charge fees for people aged over 19.

A community college is exactly that! A college for the community. These colleges are usually aimed at 'hard to reach learners', such working class people in their 30s, or people over 50. Many of the courses in these colleges are either non-accredited (i.e. you don't get a nationally recognised qualification from doing it, such as GCSEs) or 'open access' (i.e. you get a nationally recognised qualification from the open college network after getting a certain number of credits on levels 1-4, depending on the type of course that you do that is equivalent to GCSEs BUT you generally get it through the work that you do as part of the course, rather than just sitting exams at the end of it). These colleges offer a variety of courses related to people's interest, such as basic computer courses, Yoga, introduction to Psychology and Art. These courses are funded through the local council, Learning & skills council and the learners themselves.

Hope this helps!

A private college is one that is funded by tuition and donations. A City college is one that is funded by the state for the most part. And a community college is one that is funded by the city and by tuition.
