You need to get a good de-humidifier. I used to have the same problem. Now I know why when I have to empty my de-humidifier so often. It's unbelievable how much water that thing pulls. When the excess moisture is removed, the musty smell goes away. Mine is SOLEUSair, and I picked it up at Wal-Mart.

I had the same problem and i used a mix of bleach and ****&span in a garden sprayer and hose! this mix will be very strong so make sure you have some air flow!! Just spray your basement walls and floor, let it dry. Then i painted the walls with a water-proof sealer from home-depot (dry-lock is what I think it was). That was about 2 1/2 years ago and the only smell I have now is kitty litter!!!!!!!! Good luck!

this smell cosed probably because of humidity and lack of new air which helps mushrooms and other typical cave plants to develop there . the solution is to get large quantity of salt just salt but large quantity and pure it on the flour wait about one week and the plants and mushrooms will die. after that week sweep the salt with a broom, the basement suppose to be more dry now, after it had become dry color the walls of the basement with any kind of color and once in a while hit the place with oven so it will change the environment of the plants .I haven't tryed it my self . so if doesn't work don't be angry. but this seem to be the best solution.

I put baking soda on the carpet and let it stand for at least 24 hours before using the Dyson to pick it all up. Also, vinegar in a bowl helps remove the smell.
