I was wondering what long term or short term effects birth control pills can have on a woman? Also, what brand do you personally thinks works the best? And if you can get it in Washington state without a parent's permission? I'm 15. And just so nobody makes any rude comments like "why are you having sex at 15!?" I just want to say that I'm NOT. The purpose for wanting birth control is because I have a really heavy and I believe unhealthy period flow and I heard it can help with keeping your flow regular, and also help with acne. I have tried talking to my mom about it but she thinks I'm asking for sexual purposes so she won't allow me to get it, even though I've tried explaining to her that it's not. She doesn't believe in medications for the "natural way of life." i.e. A period. So any advice/information on it would be extremely helpful! Thanks! :)

I can't help for the Washington part of your question, and I'm from the UK, so I'm not sure how things stand in the US.

But over here a girl can go to her Doctor at 15 and talk to him/her about her own health concerns without her parents having to come along or know.

We also have family planning clinics, but they will not prescribe birth control pills purely for health reasons, only contraceptive reasons.

I am sorry about your Mum's opinion about heavy periods being a natural way of life, heavy periods can be as a result of certain medical conditions (like fibroids or endometriosis), and at the end of the day she is not a Doctor, and only a Doctor can decide whether your periods are heavy and check out the reasons.

Tell your Mum you want to go to the Doctor about your acne and your heavy periods, and that you're really worried, and don't go there in mind to come out with a prescription for the BCP, because not all BCP's help with heavy periods and acne, and in some people it can make them worse.

Wishing you lots of luck hon.

My daughter is not sexually active and does take birth control pills for her periods. She has a female OB/gyn doctor. There is not one pill that is best. Without your mother's ok, it will be hard to be treated correctly. The long/short term effects are different for everyone. You can try getting your mom to go to the doctor with you and having a good conversation. Good luck.

You are 15 and need to follow your Mom's rules in her house. Consult your OBGYN, you should be seeing one annually since your periods started, and have her speak with your Mom if it's warranted.

Let the doctor help both of you with this so you won't regret it later.
