Hi,

Is there really this great amount of negative publicity about travelling Africa by car( you might not get there, the petrols too much, better to fly etc) it can be done and safely( Paris Dakar Rally ?), visit this site
http://www.mapsworldwide.com/map_3754.htm, it covers road maps of African countries including, Class A roads, B roads, dirt tracks and so on.Another link is here at http://www.maps.com navigate to the continent and country section to the maps for
all of the African countries from the north To the South, Give them a try. Good luck.

Being in the transport business I think I can assure you that flying will be cheaper and much quicker. The following counts for many African countries : Roads can be tricky in places and then you haven't added bribery money which btw is usually required in US Dollars. And I don't mean bribing for trying to sneak over a border. I mean bribing because you don't have 10 emergency triangles in your vehicle. If you're not local they will make up stuff to get you to bribe them. You'd probably go through Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and then on into SA. Zimbabwe, contrary to popular belief, being the country that will give you least trouble. The above is considered a safer route . It would take a couple of weeks and you'd better not have any breakdowns. Spares for vehicles aren't always available in every country and these would have to be flown in. With trucks if the damage is really bad, in some cases it isn't even worth towing the truck back to South Africa.

If you're serious about the fact that you want to drive, then you need to choose a route where you will have to cross the minimum number of borders. It it said that the countries lining the Indian ocean are slightly ahead in development than the central and western (african) ones, so their road conditions might be better as well.

Drive from;
Egypt to Sudan,
Sudan to Kenya,
Kenya to Tanzania,
Tanzania to Mozambique, and lastly;
Mozambique to South Africa.

In terms of costs, you will pay 3 times as much as you would if you were to fly.
There are also 80% chances that you might not even reach South Africa by car.

It all depends how you go... if you ride on a donkey it will only cost you money for food and going through the boarder.. car is more expensive because of petrol... or just take an airplane it shouldnt cost you too much.... its gonna coast you a arm and a leg to drive... you gotta go through like 15 countries.
