You heard right,.. they call them Emmets,.. The Cornish are fiercely independent from the rest of the UK,.. (same as Wales and Scotland,. all pround of their heritage and history),... I lived there for 25yrs,.. and even the day I left I was reminded that I still wasn't regarded as a local,.
They're friendly enough,.. but just don't try to make out you're a good thing,.. they'll see right through you,.. plus they gossip like nobodies business,.. yap yap yap yap,.. If you want stuff to remain private and to yourself,.. shut it.
Oh,. as nice as they CAN be,.. they're also not very bright,... not the sharpest tools in the box,.... it's also pretty primative there still,. technology, living standards etc is supposedly 5 years or so behind the rest of the UK,....

Accept that you are an outsider, even if you have a flag of St. Piran on your porch.
Slow down. Give way on the road and don't jump the queue.
Learn to play or watch rugby.
There are loads of outsiders now, and some of them are very happy in Cornwall.

That's more directed at tourists. But it would probably be best if until they got to know you you didn't act flash and arrogant - maybe if you have more than one car be seen in the more modest of the two and don't think you can buy the locals in the pub off with a round of drinks - you'll be out of pocket and they'll STILL be talking about you behind your back. Try to find a few local people who have also not been there long

I think if you're used to living in the country, then ok, but if you're a city person, then it'd be dead as a doornail. I wouldn't like to live somewhere where there's say only 1 bus a week or 1 bus a day, etc.

It depends what area you want to move to,places kike Truro ate nice and people are quite friendly, but the smaller places like Padstow have their own communities and outsiders are accepted but not always welcome as the majority of the inhabitants are cornish born and bread and have strong celtic connections

We don't mind outsiders its just you get a few who try to take over and think they know it all that's what drives us up the wall. I hope you enjoy it here i wouldn't live any where else. Where are you going to live?
