Your flywheel pretty much transfers power from your engine to your wheels (I'm simplifying some, but that's enough for your question). So, yes, a broken flywheel would keep your car from moving and, perhaps, starting (though I'm not entirely certain why it wouldn't start, unless there's a fail-safe built in).

The starter is nothing but a powerful motor with a gear that shoots out and spins at a very high speed with lots of torque. When the teeth in the starter shoot out they match up perfectly with the teeth in the flywheel and spin. This causes the flywheel to spin and the motor to start. Once the motor starts you back off the starter and it stops and you drive. If the teeth on the starter or the flywheel begging to wear, grind down or chip or break then the car will have trouble starting. A new starter will have longer fresh teeth or gears and will get a car with a bad flywheel started again but I promise you that the new starter teeth will wear down rapidly. Replacing a starter is cheaper than a tow for a quick emergency fix but its not a reliable alternative after several starts you may become stuck again. Take the time to drop the transmission and have a good mechanic for ahead and change the flywheel if the teeth are worn or the wheel is warped. 821henryst@gmail

The flywheel may or may not be worn, but what you've described doesn't fit with that being the cause of your problem. The starter will drive the flywheel to turn your engine over. If the flywheel was missing teeth so that it wouldn't turn the flywheel, you would hear the whine of the starter motor turning but not your engine turning over. You would NOT just hear a click. Sounds more like a bad starter motor.
Don't know what happened when your engine rev'ed up and then cut off, but again, I would not attribute this to a worn flywheel.

The flywheel's purpose is for transferring power to the transmission. If the the flywheel breaks in the center, the engine will rev up and power is lost. The flywheel also has teeth on it for the starter to engage in, to turn the engine over. If the starter is just clicking, the flywheel could be broke or the battery cables need cleaned, or a bad battery or starter.

A flywheel is what the starter turns which gets the engine in motion. It doesn't seem like that new of a car should have a worn out flywheel already though. I just sold an 86 buick that had 285,000 miles on it and I never had any problems out of the flyweel.

There are gear teeth on the flywheel. The starter motor gear engages with the teeth on the flywheel to turn the engine over. If the teeth are worn, missing or damaged on the flywheel, the engine will not turn over. It will not cause the first symptoms you describe unless you tried to engage the starter while going 70 on the freeway.

Sounds like she sheeped the bed! Doubt very much your flywheel had anything to do with it! If you blew the engine- go to Pace Pontiac online and you can get a real good price on a new engine. Of course if you can't install it yourself-bring the vasaline!!!!!!!

try charging your batter the starter would just spin if it was the flywheel worn but i have never herd of a worn flywheel i have herd of a tooth being broke off and that Will not let your starter turn the motor if you starter is just clicking then its your batterer if your batterer is full then it could be your starter celluloid

a click on starting is what you get when your battery is too low for the starter motor to turn the flywheel.

May be-
battery low
poor connections (perhaps starter motor to earth lead?)
battery earth lead corroded
problem with starter motor
some fault with flywheel so starter can not turn it

charge the battery first, it is easy to do and won't cost anything, also check connections (borrow a battery charger and leave on overnight)
