This depends entirely on your definition of socialist - I am not sure that if entering a debate on the pros and cons of Marxist theory any one would be at all impressed by someone saying "He was a not of a tw@t".

Is socialism alive and well in Britain at all? Would you describe the current administration as 'socialist' - well given that they have made access to higher education more expensive than during the Thatcher/Major Administration, and the NHS is probably suffering from its greatest crisis right now - it is hard to argue that they are.

The 'Empire' has been slowly dismantled over a period of years and was replaced by the Commonwealth - and student of history will tell you that maintaining an Empire is expensive, leaves you over extended militarily (can't leave your colonial outposts unprotected), and will crumble eventually (see the Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire"). So the fact that most of it was returned to home rule seems eminently sensible and not the effect of 'creeping socialism'.

Britain has always punched above its weight - it is still remarkable that such a small country on the fringes of the European continent can have achieved so much - and this is largely to do with great individuals rather than great governments - our industrial age was pushed on by people like Brunel who were prepared to take risks against the establishment.

It is the fact that the industrial base was blown away during the 1980's (a point for anyone who can name the PM in that era) that Britain has declined so badly in the last few years - we are no longer 'at the cutting edge' - if we can return to the days of innovation and meritocracy over following the herd and cronyism will Britain be able to brand itself 'Great' again.

No.

It was the socialists that gave you the ability to travel out of your Parrish to find work (The poor Laws, which allowed the industrial revolution to happen, which led to the Empire), it was the socialists that gave you the vote.

If it had been left to the Aristocracy you would be a Farm Labourer doffing your cap to the local squire in a rural back water with out the Internet.

Yes we had an Empire and we actually messed it up totally. It was nothing to do with socialists it was to do with misrule and treating the subjects of the Empire as second class citizens. We did over many, many years suck the wealth out of these countries rather than investing that wealth in those countries for the future of their peoples. We didn't allow the people to engage in the political process because it wasn't their political process it was ours.
But more than steal their wealth we treated the natives of these countries with contempt.
In Australia we had organised Aborigine shoots which were actually advertised as a duck shoot would be. With prizes for the winner.
In Africa, in the Second World War, we raised African regiments but, they weren't initially allowed to fight German troops as it was felt if they shot and killed the white men it might encourage them to think that we were not as invincible as they were led to believe.
In India we treated them as third class citizens. Churchill even once argued that Indians were an argumentative race and the only way to gain their respect was to kick them.
Closer to home, in Ireland, we committed such attrocities that the "troubles" would last for eight hundred years.
Anyone who is proud of the history of the Britsh Empire should actually look beyond the Union Jack and study it in depth. We committed many wrongs and their is actually little to be proud of.

As a 'son of the Empire' (born into the Union of South Africa...now the Republic of ...) I would like to point out one thing.....Malta is NOT part of the UK....BUT (strange but true fact coming up...) . the Maltese wanted to become part of the UK (not Empire) in the same way that France has Overseas Departments. But the Labour Govt wouldn't accept their application to become a county.

We did all that sort of stuff at school in South Africa & it seems that I know more about your history (British) than you Brits do!

I don't believe Britain should be an empire or have any influence on countries outside the British Isles. I believe in independance for anyone who wants it within the UK, northern Ireland, scotland, wales.

The socialists have made many mistakes in their quest to be radical, instead of making improvements in many areas, they have made what was working fine much worse. You have to weight up their mistakes along with their successes. Every government has both.

Sorry but we don't have Malta.

We do have Gibraltar though.

It is a long long time since we had a socialist Government in the UK - New Labour is anything but!

You cannot call Tony Blair and his merry men socialist They are tory but a sort of a very insipid pale blue. If Harold Wilson was still alive he would never vote for Tony Blair. Denis Healey is still one of Tony Blair's greatest critics. Tony Benn was talking about Roy Jenkins, one of the founders of the SDP, a while ago. I think he hit the nail on the head "Well you know, the SDP did not die, it simply calls itself new labour!"

WE used to exploit half the world when we had our great empire.

Ok so you hate socialists? Do you ever use the NHS that would not exisit without socialists.

I would carry on but I think you are just being contensious as you are bored and want to find some entertainment.
