It is a rather easy, yet multilayered answer.

A) People want to believe. No matter what it is, people love to believe in something because it makes them feel part of a group. The security in numbers thinking drives people to believing in something, regardless of what.
B) Deep down people are afraid and need to have someone or something to hide behind. Given the fear-mongering the Bush junta has driven to perfection, it is so much more understandable that their followers do believe everything in order to enjoy a false sense of security.
C) People hate to be wrong. If they would (openly) doubt things the Bush junta says they would negate their vote for the Bush junta. This is a psychological effect that is prevalent in humanity since the stone age: "If the people i support are wrong, i am wrong." This reflection on oneself prohibits (most) followers to veer off course the Bush junta set out to.

It is the way we were brought up. We were brought up to believe that what ever our government or the media said was the truth. It was the way the system was everything the government said was truth. We were not like Russia being fed only the things that the Russian government want their people to know. After all we were a free country not a communist county.

A skeptical distrust of the government is normal. Believing every half witted conspiracy theory from 9/11 to hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans because, as Kayne West put it "George Bush doesn't care about black people", is stark raving insane. There is no logical reason to hate the government because W is President. There is no logical reason to become a thumb sucker because W is president either. The real truth is somewhere in between.

Remember, our government exists with the consent of the governed. The fringe of either side who distrust everyone except a certain person or group of thought, are so far out of touch they aren't worth listening to. Which category are you in?

For anyone interested in 9/11, the war in Iraq, etc., check out this website: http://www.wanttoknow.info/9-11timeline6...

Its a timeline of events surrounding 9/11 from the 70's to the present. Each entry is referenced by actual articles in the main stream news media. No theories just facts. Excellent reading.

Any true believer can be juvinile in nature. One ought to be mindful of the suspension of disbelief at all times - especially where one's government is concerend. Theoretically a government functions as part of the will of the people.
I feel sorry for anyone that surrenders independant thought for security.

Because people are gullible. The most gullible people that would believe anything their government says has to be the Americans. They believe anything that Bush says. They would even believe Bush if he said that Hurricane Katrina was caused by Bin-Laden. I'm not taking the piss, but seriously, the americans would believe that.

Some because they have a faith in the system that the system honestly doesn't merit.

Others because they cannot or will not face up to the unpleasantries.

Some accept it, but they know something is wrong but are not in a position to refuse it
