if it's just a small leak and you don't need a new roof, go to the local hardware store and get some black roof pitch. it might be called roof tar, but either way, it is a tar substance, and a trou. go to where the leak is and trou on the roof pitch over the leak. but if your roof looks like it needs replaced, and it'll just leak in more places, it'll just be cheaper to have it replaced now than later when the wood gets rotten.

After many attempts in multiple different styles of patching, we discovered the only sure way is to strip everything off down to the original base, then cover the entire roof with a 1/4" thick coat of roof tar. When thet dries you can spread some gravel around to diffuse water coming down in heavy rainstorms. It's the only way to be sure - one large layer of waterproof tar.
