How do they arrange the furniture to lessen the damage?

Actually there are no absolute earthquake proof building.
They can stand ussualy up to 8 R scale earthquake,if the epicentre is closed enough.
To stand during earthquake, several precautions are made:
1.designed with additional dynamic load,...this will result on BIGGER COLUMN..and denser steel reinforcing.

2.now in multi stories they earthquake shock absorber.

3.put thicker wall.as shear wall

4.avoid too many loose furniture inside,...it is reccomended if possible you anchor cabinet to a wall,....not too many glass accessorries,..etc

no such thing as proof. There's earthquake resistant buildings though, made with lots of steel, and less concrete. You see, concrete breaks apart with vibration, which makes the building crumble during an earthquake. Now, steel is flexible and does not break apart as easily, but nothing can withstand anything more than a 5 on the richter scale earthquake..
