I have read many great books that scare the crap out of me. Here are some written by other writers besides the usual Stephan King, Dean Koontz etc. I suggest:
Darkness, Tell Us by Richard Laymon.
The Infinite by Douglas Clegg
The Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
lost boy lost girl by Peter Straub
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (this boos is crazy wierd)
Every Dead Thing by John Connoll
The Summoning by Bentley Little
The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris

Of course there a tons more.....what about you all?

It by Stephen King - I had to stop reading it because it was scaring me so badly. I have read several Dean Koontz books - and I like him, I also read lost boy lost girl by Peter Straub - I liked it and have enjoyed other Peter Straub works. I will have to try some of your other suggested books.

I have trouble finding a book that really scares me. I laughed all the way through Silent Hill, the movie, and a friend of my told me it was terrifying. I think maybe, the Bible, the end gets you thinking of what might happen to you when you die.

Stephen King's "The Stand" What makes it so scary is the fact that something like that has the potential of happening in the world today.

Pet Cemetery by Stephen King, I couldn't finish the book, it's the only book I never finished. "The Stranger Beside Me" by Ann Rule is scary because it's the true story of how a dear friend of hers slowly but surly turned into a serial killer -Ted Bundy

The Exorcist and the Shining are two of my favorites. Both made the hair on the back of my neck stand up for a while!
