Every where I travel throughout Britain -some places obviously worse than others-the streets are covered in discarded gum. Many people do not realise this but just look down the next time that you are out and you will see black splodges everywhere.A few months ago one of our cretinous councillors arranged as a publicity stunt to clear a few feet of pavement with a gadget which cleared the mess.Needless to say unless preventative action had been taken the cleared area would have been bad as ever within a few days.

I don't think that chewing gum should be banned from sale. It doesn't have harmful effects on people's health.

However, I do agree that discarded gum on pavements is unsightly and costs us (via council cleansing services) dearly for its removal. Some councils have already started to educate the public by making available small pouches so that the user can discard the gum in a more environmentally friendly way.

I believe the answer might be to tax the product at the point of sale and channel the revenue back into local councils.

I also believe that the issue of on the spot fines may also affect the behaviour of these thoughtless people

Yes, compared to the problem of chewing gum, I think we spend far too much of our hard earned tax money on idiotic ideas like education and health care. Just because chewing gum can stimulate brain activity, aid oral hygeine, support those trying to kick nicotene addiction and be pleasurable without the side affects of sugary fatty foods, alcohol or cigarettes, it doesn't mean that it's not public enemy number one any more. I, for one, would love too see more obeses smokers with rotting teeth on the streets than the patches of discarded chewing gum. In fact, we should mount ggun towers on every street corner to shoot gum chewers, just in case they think about spitting it out onto the floor.

Did I say gun towers? Maybe I meant bins. Oh, no, that might attract hordes of terrorists with their bombs....

Bring back hanging and national service, too!

The problem is not the gum but the way some people dispose of it. The ideal solution would be to ban it and find a substitute that has similar properties initially but which eventually disintegrates in your mouth. Any ideas?

As a little hedgehog my legs get stuck on the chewing gum. I think it should be banned as a fellow hedgehog that I know got tummy ulcers with eating the stuff. He also blew up some bubble gum and when it burst he had a job getting off his needles.

No, we should teach people not to litter. The problem is not the gum, it's the people.

How about forcing everyone caught throwing gum on the ground or on other public property to do a few hours of community service cleaning up gum? That should teach them.

Yes , maybe . Chewing gum is banned in singapore and it is one of the cleanest country in the world. However, i dont think it is the most efficient way of handling the problem :/

It needs to be made less sticky that is for certain.
My daughter made her's into a long string and stuck it up her face. I had to use curved nail scissors to cut her hair to the scalp to get it out. It has taken almost two years to grow back properly
