No 2 diesel is the same thing as No 2 home heating oil. The only difference is that (here in the USA) they add a dye to the home heating oil so that they can detect it in the fuel tank of a truck. Home heating oil does not have the highway taxes on it that road fuel does.

Right now, the demand for gasoline has dropped, due to the end of the summer driving season. The demand for diesel / heating oil is high, because people are filling their home tanks in preparation for the cold winter months.

The law of supply and demand is working. Demand is high and the price goes up. Demand lowers and the price goes down

As far as I know in Canada diesel is Cheaper than regular gas. That's why most of the Transit buses use diesel. Some taxi drivers cabs do too! I don't drive but I do use the bus!
I've heard the bus driver talking about diesel being cheaper than regular gas. Did you accidentally make a goof up in your question?
I've never heard of Diesel costing more before!
Did you mean something other than price such as higher performance?

Diesel fuel requires even less refinement than kerosene or jet fuel. The higher consumer cost is supposedly a result of the higher demand for gasoline, so diesel has a higher stocking cost for oil companies because of lesser demand. I suspect the profit margin on diesel is much higher than for gasoline, however, and the higher cost is more likely justified by oil co's. stockholder demands for higher profits, than by actual expenses. Basically, it's a low-cost, high-profit product.
