I am totally confused. Some people claim that the Koran is a book of peace while others say that the Koran incites a Muslim to commit acts of violence against non-believers. They even go so far as to give quotes backing this up. Help me out here. Does one need a special interpreter to tell them the true meaning of the Koran's words.

When a non muslim quotes Quran to show that Quran is a violent book, it is sure that he has got an agenda to abase Islam, and a casual reader will just take his words to be true. As a point, it would be nice to read 2 verse before and 2 verse after the quoted verse so you can know in what context it is revealed and make clear the quoted verse. Some times verse that states of punishment in hereafter is quoted to show Quran is a violent book. It is true Quran do not promise the same treatment in the here after for the good and wicked people alike. Most wicked and cruel people in this world will get deserving place in hereafter.

Another side of this is that, there are some Muslims that claim that verse of tolerance and peace in Quran has been nullified by some other Quran verses revealed during war. This is a lie that they claim regarding Quran. There can be verses revealed progressively(like in the case of alchohol prohibition) but the earlier verses still are valid and still to be obeyed. (There is no earlier verse allowing alchohol). No where in the Quran and authentic sayings of prophet, this nullification or abrogation of verses are mentioned. This theory is developed by people who simply cannot digest some parts of Quran.

List of verses these people claims to be nullified or abrogated is long and this include the following verse
"There is no compulsion in religion; truly the right way has become clearly distinct from error; " Quran 2:256.

There is no question of this verse in Quran being invalidated by another verse, since in the second part of the verse it is stated that "Truely the right way has become clearly distinct from error". So if the first part is invalidated, then second part also become invalidated, meaning "right way is not distinct from error"

There is no question of verses becoming invalidated and if some one claims that a part of Quran has been invalidated and do not need to be followed, they are actually rejecting Quran. See the following verse from Quran regarding accepting part of the Book and rejecting rest.
"Do you then believe in a part of the Book and disbelieve in the other? What then is the reward of such among you as do this but disgrace in the life of this world, and on the day of resurrection they shall be sent back to the most grievous chastisement, and Allah is not at all heedless of what you do. " Quran 2 :85

what an huge amount of bullshit. NOTHING is metaphoric in the quran there are two proofs of this. it requires the sunnah to be interpreted (nothing metaphorical) and there s a precise verse forbidding interpretation. more there are 400 verses of hatred and only a dozen of tolerance . and yes i m a zionist duominatti payed by the IDF.

I've heard it's because the Qu'ran is written in a very metaphoric way that can often be interpreted in different ways and is hard to translate accurately. I don't know if this is true, this is just something I heard.

The Koran was written by a man and not inspired by God, so ofcourse you will find several versions of it because it comes from men.

Because it was compiled in a helter skelter style fashion when Muhammed (PBUH) died. Several passages were lost or distroyed and so many of the people who collaborated on writing it added their own spin on things.

It's no different than interpreting the Bible. Everyone puts their own spin on the Bible - God is benevolent; God is vengeful; This is a sin, that is a sin; No it's not, etc....
