i recently decided to go to uni after having two girls and since its been almost 8 years since ive been to school, im finding it hard to even start an essay. can anyone help? any suggestions would be great, thank you.

We need more information. What is your topic? History is far too broad to begin with. Narrow it down considerably. For example,
History; history of the United States; history of the Civil War; the Battle of Gettysburg; the effects of the Battle of Gettysburg that led to the end of the Civil War. Now you have a topic that is manageable.

What is the topic?
Introdutions don't need to be spectacularly long. Start with something along the lines of "In the following essay...." write what you have chosen and summarize the essay in a short paragraph.

your introduction usually presents the main idea of your topic. It gives general ideas of what you want to present then grows in the body of the essay...
