The spiders which originated the name "money spider" belong the the genus Erigone. Several of these are abundantly common in Britain. They use a method of dispersal called ballooning. The spider lets out a strand of silk into the air and wind resistance lift the spider into the air and it "flies". At certain times of the year many millions of money spiders use this to move to new areas. This is how spiders occasionally get caught in people's hair - it was thought when this happened the person would be coming into money - hence the name money spider!

Of the 620 species of spider in Britain, about 250 of them are classified as Linyphiidae, the majority of them being known as "Money Spiders". For the most part they are about 2 mm in length but there are one or two which are half this size. Most have uniformly black bodies and brownish legs. Popular superstitions associate these spiders with wealth, hence people are not as prone to killing them. Adult money spiders are widespread throughout Britain in the late summer and early autumn. A common species of money spider spin hammock -like webs, (see below), which are often seen close to ground level on garden plants, long grass, gorse or other vegetation.

Linyphiidae is a family of spiders, including nearly 4,250 described species in over 550 genera worldwide. This makes Linyphiidae the second largest family of spiders after the Salticidae. New species are still being discovered throughout the world, and the family is poorly known. Because of the difficulty in identifying such tiny spiders, there are regular changes in taxonomy as species are combined or divided.
Spiders in this family are commonly known as sheet weavers (from the shape of their webs), or money spiders (in the United Kingdom, from the superstition that if such a spider is seen running on you, it has come to spin you new clothes, meaning financial good fortune).

Any small spider can be a money spider, I don't think its a specific species.
There was an old superstition that if you saw a spider and didn't kill it you would receive some money. I suspect this is the source of the name.

Linyphia triangularis, is the real name for Money spider. Don't have any clue as to why we call it money spider!!

Family Linyphiidae. The Money spider is also known as the Sheet spider.
Believed to have been given it's name in the UK because the spider in its web is believed to attract its prey; thus the spider amulet is believed to attract money to the bearer. In short, Europeans seem to have used spider amulets in the same way that African-Americans use a pair of magnetic lodestones to "draw" money. In the United Kingdom, Shona McNeill writes: "There is a relic of this belief in my family -- there is a species of tiny black spider, that we call the Money Spider. If one walks across your palm, it will bring good luck in money."
