You can go by both Bus and train. Its better if you go by train. From airport go to Chennai central station and take any train which goes towards north ie Vijayawada/Delhi/Hyderabad/Visakapatnam. Depending upon your arrival at the station you will get an express train, but ckeck before boarding whether it has a halt at Sullurpet. Almost all express trains stop at Sullurpet not superfast trains.
By bus you can go to Channai main bus stand. You will get quite a few buses.You can find direct buses to SHAR but frequency is less.
Journey is 2 - 3 hrs by train.

Once youarrive at Chennai Airport, beware about the taxi & auto drivers. They may take for you a ride, by means of charging the fare to exorbitant levels. If you are travelling with luggage & family, I suggest, you call the cab services in the city, who have a standrard rate chart for every kilo meter.
If you dont have luggage, just take an auto rickshaw to the Koyambedu Main Bus Terminus. From airport, auto driver may charge you Rs.80/-.There are cab/van services from the arrival hall of the airport itself. Be sure to compare the rates between the operators based from city & airport.
From Koyambedu Main Bus Terminus, you have frequent services to andhra pradesh, which go via sulurpet. I will give you some web-site addresses, to which you can either call/e-mail, on the part of fares they charge per kilo meter.
Most of the operators from the city, come prompt to pick up the passengers at the arrival hall. You have to inform the correct details of the passengers who are going to arrive, flight number , date and time.
