"Sleeping to Rain
What primal cells respond
to rain's fall, the hush of sound,
and why? Can it be sleeping in rain,
that mote of memory hidden,
the rain bestirs: a water life,
amphibious, the soft, safe
familiar sleep? Or did the predator
our ancestors feared find shelter
in the rain, lie low, so sleep
in rain was undisturbed and deep?
Or is it just the liquid rush
creates again the slosh
and pulse we sense within the womb
where first we sleep and dream?"

I don't know the medical reason, but I sleep better when it rains/thunders/storms, as well. I have pretty much decided that the sound of the rain falling is soothing, and "cleans" everything. Kinda like it washes away all the stress, and other stuff that prevents a good nights sleep.

White Noise is soothing. It's repetative and it's calming. Think of the noise that baby mobiles emit.. it's calm, it's relaxing and nothing could put you to sleep faster.
The sound of rain on a roof is something that reminds us of being in the womb.. it's white noise, it's abstract, it's repetive and it's calming. It will put us to sleep because it subconsiously reminds us of the most comfortable time of our lives.. being warm, fed and taken care of in the womb.

It is instinctual that we sleep when it rains. This was bred into our dna way back in the caveman days when those who slept during rainstorms, and didn't go outside to hunt, didn't get sick, stayed healthy, and were able to procreate because of that.

well, maybe the sound of rain soothes you, causing you nerves in your brain to release chemicals that make you sleep more. and dream more. and everything that happens while you sleep.
or, you don't like the rain, because then youd have to commute in wet clothes. or something. maybe you don't like gray clouds. so you decide to sleep in more.

many people do. that's one of the reasons the "sound machines" are so popular. it is probably the comforting sound. distractions (like traffic) are not as noticable.
