Don't do it secretly. Sit her down, tell her that you are going to read her e-mail right now, and ask her to log you in so you can do so. If you do it secretly, you will not be able to use any of the information that you find, without her finding out that you've been snooping behind her back.

I would suggest talking to her first. If she doesn't give you her password you may be out of luck and there is an issue of trust that you should address. What you can do is warn her about talking to strangers on the Internet. If I were a parent I would have the adult settings blocked on her computer and I would check her cookie browser to see where she has been going. Above all I would sit down and talk to her about places like My Space and even Yahoo. Because blogging areas are set up for both adults and children. My observation has been that most of the people in here are lonely home oriented people and they are harmless with good intent. I often worry about displaced emotion and the Internet. I am talking about people with on going problems and then they burst out at others with hateful email and chat. Because teenagers are highly emotional we should all refrain from obscure behavior as much as possible. Also the whole idea of writing with emotion is a developing educating process which tends to improve with time. I really think that in the future it will have an impact on people in trouble at the time of the delema. The reason I believe this is because we are talking to people in their private places beyond the social wall and directly into their minds. For this reason we should try to be as kind as possible.

If you are concerned about who your daughter is communicating with, then like earlier suggested, talk to her. Ignore the make her log you on and read it part, since in most people's minds, once you have violated their privacy, with or without their knowledge, they will lose respect for you, and it may not be regainable.
Sounds more like you need to worry about your parenting techniques, and maybe you need to worry more about how YOU are communicating with your daughter. Talk to her, make sure she understands what CREEPS are, and how to spot weirdos, and to avoid them, and if she really takes what you tell her to heart, the only things you really NEED to worry about have been aleviated.
But also remember what its like being a teenager or pre-teen. She could be talking to friends about crushes, or any number of other innocent things, none of which she prolly wants her parent knowing, or else she would have told you.
Just remember, don't screw up here, or you may make a mistake you CANT take back. Who wants to be betrayed by the only people they should be able to trust ABSOLUTELY???
But then again, this is just my opinion.
If you do violate her privacy, worse, without her knowledge, I think you get what you deserve. It's like reading a diary, except there was even MORE of an expectation of privacy i think.

Yahoo is doubtless having a great problem with their e mail -- yet they does no longer do something well mannered or ordinary like tell their clientele. you could examine the questions approximately this website - approximately as quickly as a minute somebody writes in and says "i won't have the ability to get into my e mail" - perhaps Yahoo merely hasn't observed yet. i'm so bored to death w/ them, i'm changing to Gmail.

Ask her. Don't invade her privacy. If you do that she will never trust you again - and with good reason.
Hacking accounts is still hacking, even if she is your daughter!
