Sounds like yellow jackets. Sevin dust does a great job of wiping them out. Put a brick by the hole sometime during the day. Then put (about 1/8th cup) some Sevin (carbarly) dust in an old squeeze catsup bottle. On a cool evening put a lantern so it shines on the hole but that's about 10 feet from your approach route. Then approach the hole slowly and put the top of the catsup bottle down to the hole, even touch the ground with it if you can and squeeze. When you've done this, pick up the brick and put it over the hole to trap them down there with the dust. If any escape they will go to the lantern because they are photosensitive and not to you. By morning they'll all be dead.

I've had this too. Found them while mowing, its wasn't much fun.

I took a 2 liter bottle and popped a very small hole in the cap with a finish nail. I put about 1/2 cup of gas in the bottle. I stuck the bottle, top down, into the hole.

The gas will drip slowly and the fumes will do the job for you. I left it there for about 2 days. Let gravity and the fumes do the work for you. After everything was quiet, I took a bit of cement (mortar or concrete would work if you have any) and plugged the hole in case others tried to reuse the hole later on.

Be safe.

Wacth where the bees come out from then dig a large entry hole to the underground hive.

Find a willing ferret (they like honey), create a small harness out of an old pair of knickers. Strap a firework to its back, light it then send the ferret down the hole. Bingo!

Take a clear glass bowl and set it over the entrance hole, they'll eventually all die. Just make sure the bowl stays on top of it.

My dad will wait until night and pour gas in the hole and throw in a match--POOF no more bees.

Wait til it is chilly, or night time, and they are all in there sleeping, though.

Be careful. If you don't know what you're doing, leave it to a professional exterminator.
