Not knowing where you are, I have to say,,,Anyone in the business in 2006, is very unlikely using Wood as a foundation substance.

A wood FRAME house however, on a concrete slab is something that is done into the millions of new homes construction.

At one time,,,IE,,,1992 Wood frame was less expensive, than block. I wish I had gone with block for the few dollars more, then added steel studs for the roofing/attic.

I assume you know that there are wood frame houses that can certainly last the life or the mortgage, or owner.

I assume you also know that block, isn't degradable in the weather, or through insect infestation, like wood is.

I think it's a matter of economics. Decide the initial expense, versus the long term benefits, and analyze what it is you wish to achieve.

Do not trust a wood foundation on anything. I know they claim treated wood will last 50 yrs, but I am not a big supporter of this type construction. A poured concrete footing with a masonry foundation or poured concrete foundation is the only proven method. Some people build houses out of bales of straw - you know the earth friendly people who want natural methods and materials. That's fine for them - not me. Anytime you have to buy bales of straw to put on a room addition is a signal that you may be a few eggs shy of a dozen. Don't be swayed by a slick real estate agent or the owner - look for another house!!!!!!!!!

Wood foundations need to be re-blocked and this is sooooooooooooooooo expensive. Now concrete slabs are more stable. If you think of how wood can rot over the years compared to concrete? The answer is simple. Concrete is the answer.

It's far easier to maintain a pier and beam house. It's much easier to do add rooms.

Because you can crawl under a pier and beam house you can access plumbing and pipes easier.

Concrete / Slab cracks, cracked foundations are extremely expensive to repair and will lower the value of your house significantly.
