Remove it and fold it properly in order to keep the dirt inside it. Then take it to the balcony and start beating it. Until you are sure all the dust inside is removed. Then you put it back and with soap you make by your hand a hard cloth each peice of the carpet.
Finally use the hoover to make sure no soap is still inside the carpet.

Get a company to come in and steam-clean them with industrial equipment. Or hire it yourself. I used a local firm to clean the staircase and landing carpets for only £30, and the results are so much better than messing around with 'normal' products.

call a carpet cleaning co. before you move in and give it a lot of time to COMPLETELY dry, find a company that drys the carpet, some company's come in and the carpet seems to never get dry

Hire it done, it may cost more than doing it yourself but it is worth it. Plus when you are moving into a new house, time is money.
I tried to clean mine myself and got to much water into the carpet and the machine wasn't powerful enough to suck it out. It took forever to dry out and while it was drying it started stinking of sour milk and feet. It was so bad I couldn't sleep for the stink, so then I called a pro. to clean it and deoderize it.

I would hire a professional. They are insured and have the chemicals to take out the toughest stains. So if anything gets messed up then they have to pay.

Go to your local DIY store and rent the rug doctor. It works a treat.
If you are looking to buy then try a vax, I have one and it's great.
DO NOT invest in a Bissell.
