Even if you're not going there to retire, the various surveys of "best retirement spots" are a good place to begin your research. They stress low taxes and good weather and high safety.

I live in a town called westminster MD has 2nd lowest crime for our state. We are rural/agricultural but only an hour from Baltimore, Hanover PA and an hour and 1/2 from Washington DC. Median income is probably 40-50,000per yr. Good schools and educational programs. Gas price today is 2.47per gal. and we have most of your major stores and restaurants. Not much snow in the winter. Amost always sunny. Had some winters with no snow and some winters with a dumping (1 every 6 or 7 yrs.)

Try Phoenix, Tempe or Mesa, Arizona...its a beautiful area. It gets very hot in the Summertime, but has the most beautiful desert Sunrises and sunsets. Plus those areas are really safe to live in.

I don't live there, but Wisconsin has a lot of good sized cities that are cheap and inexpensive to live in. I was impressed with the lack of crime when I visited there in March. If you can stand the cold, its a nice area to live in. Pretty much any average sized city in the Midwest is like that. But, they have a lot of economic problems due to losses in manufacturing jobs. So, there are always negative sides to everything.

Boise, Idaho.
Low Crime, but lots of pond water, so you have to look out for the mosquitoes, and West Nile virus.
Cost of living is a lot less than places like big cities, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles....

Go to the library. In the reference section there should be a book called Places Rated Almanac. Great starting point.
