Wonder where these funny noises are coming from? The part to blame is your diaphragm. This is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest, and all hiccups start here.

The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.

The sudden rush of air into the lungs causes the glottis to close, creating the "hic" noise.

Take a look at wiki for more info on it:

Doctors suggest that it's because the diaphragm and lungs get out of sync. One is trying to pull air in while the other is trying to push it out. In order to fix this, the diaphragm will 'jerk', thus causing the 'hic cup".

The diaphragm controllers living in you get really bored and decide to experiment.
Or if there sorta ok with there job and not ready to stir up trouble it's normally sortof a semi passive resistance to something you did. . . (guessing normally ate/drank) (possibly breathed!)

I know two really good ways to stop hic ups, but sharn't tell as that wasn't the question.

I'm not sure at all, but they are a spasm of the diaphragm. It has something to do with breathing because when we are foetus' we practise breathing in the womb until we get hiccups! It's seems to be nature's way of teaching the foetus (and after birth - baby) how to breathe properly!

For years I couldn't burp or hiccup because my diaphragm was ruptured and I didn't know, but now I can (had surgery) and do so with pride! :)

Nobody knows exactly, buy hiccups are involuntery movements of the diaphram in the chest caused by a trigger (usually spicey foods or something).

It's actually very simple. It's sugar's fermenting in your stomach and the gas they give off during this process causes the hiccups.

we get hiccups because you get a build up of wind in the stomach and intestines, its small pockets of wind thats why it comes up in bits.Drink a glass of water in one go to stop them,it pushes them all together and will probably give you one big belch.

I dont actually know 'why' we get them.....but i do have a good way of getting rid of them!

If someone has the hiccups....ask them 'what did you have for breakfast?' - have no idea why or how it works but it gets rid of mine or anyone i know straight away!!!

try it!!!
