Where did the touch wood superstition come from?
We never know for sure where such beliefs come from. It's thought touching wood was a way of checking the authenticity of building material.

It's an old Pagan thing. If my memory serves me correctly, it dates back to the time when the ancient Celts believed that trees were occupied by spirits. By touching the wood you were granted short term protection by the spirit that owned the tree.
The tradition just stuck after that.

This comes from the celtic religions where different woods had different mystical properites...I think oak means wisdom and elm means strength, but I could have them reversed.
