it will be difficult to get the work visa now that you have already been granted a visit visa. you need to think whether you have found a job you want and if so, ask the company to sponsor you. if you have not found a job and are just asking beforehand (that is very moral of you!) get in touch with the immigration office and ask them if you can have a working visa. they will assess your skills (will need to see certificates etc) before they are able to grant anything. visas like these will be offered to skilled workers (i.e. there is a shortage of that skill here) or cheap labourers (i.e. they cant get workers for that job). it will be a difficult process though. you could also consider setting up a new business. in that case you will need to get an enterprise or business visa from the immigration office.

You can apply, before arriving for a working tourist visa - this usally allows for a 2yr visit, and with a work permit for the first year of that visa. Once here you can apply for a work permit or extention to the working tourist visa, but you would need to have a company 'sponsor' you - in effect its less than £200, but they need to prove you were the most suitable for the job and that they had tried to hire UK candidates, or you need to work in a profession which is on the 'required' list - i.e. doctors, some nursing staff etc etc, eg you need to have a specialism that we're short of. NO the whole point of a visit visa is that you are visiting as a tourist not here too work. Any self respecting company will ask to see your visa before you start too work if it is a visit visa you have no chance, though there are plenty of cheap nasty companies that will happily take advantage pay you very little treat you like crap.
