I was just looking at the leaderboard-- There are people there with over 5,000 points who have been on YA for only a few months, have fewer than fifty answers, and about twenty best answers.
How is it possible that they have earned so many points? Did somebody make a mistake somewhere? Or did I really miss something someplace?

One earns points in the following ways:
Logging on: 1 point daily
Answering questions: 2 points
Receiving Best Answer: 10 points
Giving a Best Answer to one of your questions: 3 points
Voting for a Best Answer: 1 point

In addition points used to be given for rating a Best Answer and for having one of your Best Answers rated (so it was once possible to earn a maximum of 62 points per answer!)

There is also a possibility that the figures given are not accurate - there have been some problems with the statistics in the past.
