Heat over the oceans evaporate the water from the surface and it forms into clouds. The prevailing wind blows them towards our shores and as they move over the land mass the clouds rise. As the temperature at the higher altitude is colder the clouds which contain water evaporated from the sea get cold and therefore cannot hold onto the moisture, it condenses into droplets and so it falls onto the land. Could be why Ireland is wetter and greener as for the Atlantic air flow it is first in line.
