in Australia the age at which a child can be charged with any crime is 11.
they will be dealt with as a juvenile offender between the ages of 11 and 18. however if a person over 18 is arrested for a crime committed before their 18th birthday they can still be dealt with in the juvenile system.
juveniles can and do still receive custodial sentences for serious or repeated crimes but these sentences are carried out in juvenile facilities. this is not a soft option. juvenile facilities still provide maximum security when necessary, they still prevent the detainees from moving freely within the community, they still have expectation of a particular standard of behaviour while in custody.

It all depends on the state you are in I have heard that here in Texas as younge as 15 I personally know of a girl who turned 17 in the state pen
