The first answer is really correct. The isp itself does nothing to monitor your traffic, other than the AMOUNT of traffic, and sometimes they don't even track that.
If your trying to avoid "big brother", the only one that really exists is government, or police, otherwise the privacy protection act comes into play. And if you have attracted law enforcements attention, then your out of luck chuck. There is no way to keep them from knowing what they want, unless maybe your a genious hacker.
Speaking of hackers, maybe thats what you are trying to hide yourself from... but once again, a determined and intelligent hacker can probably work around whatever prevention you lay down. But once again, lets hope you havent attracted that type of attention.
Most hackers get access to people's systems by loading a program onto your computer, via email, or scripts on a website. For this there IS an answer. Someone earlier said to get firefox, and I recomend it. Once you do, get an addon called NoScript
It blocks all scripts from loading, and allows you to choose what to allow. I highly recomend it, since it will help to block alot of useless and somtimes harmful junk.
Hope this helps.
Oh, and the answer previous, made by "kay" cannot be taken too seriously. No, they do not, and cannot monitor such things as search words, or anything else. In this country there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. If you have somehow attracted negative attention, and given reasonable cause, they could and probably WOULD monitor you, but otherwise, theres absolutely no reason for them to do so.
Do not be paranoid, but also do not be overly complacent. The only real entity to fear on the internet are those who seek to corrupt it with false information, and those who seek to abuse the information, by stealing or other.
Please don't ruin someones experience on the internet with paranoia, spreading unverified and unsubstantiated information.

Create an encrypted tunnel through to another system and surf from there. Microsoft Terminal Services is good for this. Of course at some point somebody can see you.
Better still don't do anything you don't want others to see.
Simply using a public proxy will not help you with your issue.

Well there's a few programs out there but they have their problems. For instance I use one that wont let me access certain sites because I'm on a foreign proxy. Plus none of them are free i'm afraid. If you'd like a free trial, go to download.com and type "Anonymizer ". Good luck.

I appreciated all the advice you got ahead of my answer. But, I have to tell ya something...there is no way to block your surfing from being totally unseen. Please do not think I am nuts here, but there are gov. groups that can and do monitor the net, looking for certain words or phrasing to zero in on. I am sorry our society is like this, but it can't be stopped..technology is here and the only way to protect yourself is not use it at all!

hmmn, have a look into gettting a proxy server, though im still not sure whether this would hide your traffic from your isp
anything we do on the net is recorded somewhere and is always traceable
