Not long ago nearly all tap water in the United States used chlorine to treat the water.

The fixture on faucets (sorry I don't know the name of it) that mixed air with the water helped force out the chorine from the water to improve taste, (and it probably made the water more healthy since chlorine is not specific to kill just bacteria or other microorganism, but can kill cells in general.

Anyway there have been two major changes regarding this.

In the mid 1970's it was found in Indianapolis and some other cities that choroform levels occured in chorinated water. For indianapolis it was especially bad, since they got most of their water from the Wabash river, and they used 4 times more water than flowed through the city. (How was that possible?, They recycled the treated water they dumped into the river.)

So Indianapolis switched to ozone to treat their water, do they still use ozone?, I have not checked.

The other major change was a switch from Chorine to Chloramine, a substance that is much more stable, and cannot be forced out by air from the water. The switch has been done quietly, the only real warning is regards to washing machine manufactures having to switch plastic tubing since the choramine damages old tubing. But my thinking is, if it damages tubing what is it doing to the human body?

There is a 'chlorine institute' that promotes the use of chlorine chemicals that is a very powerful lobby, like the Tobacco Institute was with tobacco companies. That is why there is little information or debate on these issues.
