Has anyone ever been to Sorrento?

I am going there next week (well just outside) and am wondering if its any good?

Sorrento is a small city in Campania, Italy, with some 16,500 inhabitants. It is a popular tourist destination. The town can be reached easily from Naples and Pompeii, as it lies at the south-eastern end of the Circumvesuviana rail line. The town overlooks the bay of Naples, as the key place of the Sorrentine Peninsula, and many viewpoints in the city allow sight of Naples itself (visible across the bay) and Vesuvius.

The "Amalfi drive" (connecting Sorrento and Amalfi) is the narrow road that threads around the high cliffs above the Mediterranean.

Ferry boats and hydrofoils provide services to Naples, Amalfi, Positano, Capri and Ischia. Sorrento's sea cliffs are impressive and its luxury hotels have attracted famous personalities including Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti.

Sorrento is famous for the production of Limoncello, an alcoholic aperitif made from lemon rinds, alcohol, water and sugar. Other agricultural production includes citrus fruit, wine, nuts and olives. Wood craftsmanship is also developed.

The trips to the islands of Capri and Procida are worth a day trip each.

I was there in April, and I also visited the island of Ischia last year. I stayed on Via del Capo, which is about ten minutes (by foot) from the city center. There were great views from out there. On the opposite end of Corso Italia from the Cape, you'll find a fantastic citrus grove where they've grafted lemon branches onto orange trees and vice versa, and where you can try fresh-made liqueres. Via P.R. Giuliani is a great street for eating- there is a fantastic restaurant called L'Antica Trattoria. It's a bit of a splurge, but the set menu portions are HUGE. No "nouveau cuisine" here, just lots of great food made with local ingredients. Beside the restaurant is Gelateria Davide, which is famous for two of its homemade flavours - Noci di Sorrento (Sorrento Nuts, which is a creamy blend of mixed nut flavours) and Profumi di Sorrento (a fruity blend of citrus fruits).

Sorrento is close to Pompeii (40 minutes by train) and you can take boats to Capri or Ischia. There are easy bus connections to Positano and Amalfi (those towns are very similar, just choose one for a visit). If you're interested in music, consider visiting Ravello, which hosts a famous music festival (classical music) and has great views because it's uphill from the beach.

I was there and I have to say it's a very touristy town, but well worth visiting. Myself and the other half were staying in Naples and we did a couple of day trips around the bay.

You might find it helpful to know that public transport, while the buses run fairly regularly, are always jammed full going to and from places like Positano and Amalfi, so perhaps you might consider hiring a car for countryside trips. Be warned, however - it's way better and easier to take the local train (the Circumvesuviana) to Naples and Pompeii (and you really shouldn't miss Pompeii, it's pretty amazing) because Naples is NOT well signposted and the local drivers are all nutters, they all think they're Michael Schumacher, even the grannies ...

Now if you were asking me about going to Naples, I'd be able to tell you more - everyone told us not to go there, it was dangerous, but so far I have found it to be the nicest place, the people were so friendly there, and it's a lovely city. I hated leaving it ...

I went 30 years ago but a friend of mine who has relatives in Italy says Sorrento is absolutely beautiful. He's been quite a few times so it must be good. Enjoy the food and wine. I know I would. Have fun.

i was there in July,it is stunningly beautiful.my favourite places were,the San Francesco cloisters(i was at a wedding there),bougainvillea gelateria on the corsa italia(70 flavours of ice cream!)villa comunale(public gardens)the drains,which is tiny streets with tiny shops,amazing.you can have a sneak preview if you type in a search for sorrento webcams.there is a bar not far from the webcam that has loads of flags outside the door,a man usually tries to get passers by to come in,it's well worth a visit!!there's a great bar on the piazza tasso called bar syrenuse.it's a great place to people watch.go to hotel michelangelo for a drink at the bar,it's where i stayed.guiseppe at the bar is amazing!he gives everyone nicknames.i'm sure you'll have a fabulous time and like me want to "come back to sorrento"

yes! been there twice and just came back this second time a couple of weeks ago. its a touristy town, but theres onlyONE thing i love about it. theres this secret roman ruins public beach, its well hidden and for some reason when i answer question on people asking things on what to see and do in sorrento or amalfi they never seem to care what i say as i always mention at the end, 'if you are interested in how to get to that hidden beach, contact me ' and they never do and i figure they never found it, because they were never even written on my guide book of this 'hidden beach'.

I have been there and I have also come back to Sorrento. Try the raspberry gelato at Figi's.

No, but I have been to a lot of other cities in Italy, including Venice and Rome. Have you ever been to Trieste? If you go, go out into the countryside, you will LOVE it!
