That is such a natural way to make noise that the cave men must have discovered it. So it was invented way before writing which means that we can only guess.
Probably primitive man discovered early that the sound could scare away animals.

I think that a guy went in search of lost sheep somewhere in Scotland. It was cold and to keep warm he swung his arms, beat them against his knees, and palms together. What he had'nt realised that he was lost and the sheep were already home. But the townsfold heard the clapping sounds and found him in the mist. Then they realised that it was a decent way to signal with the echoes off the hills.
Do you know the Japanese go to the temple of the Sun God, (Amaterasu I think) and clap their hands thrice so that the God would send some blessings their way. Read in You Only Live Twice, saw it on Discovery.
The first part is pure speculation.

involountary response to happiness, warning, applause/clapping has evolved through time to mean different things to different races.
We sometimes see people clapping at a funeral, like that of the HRH lady Diana Spencer, the Princess of Wales.
what is called the final hurrah. a means of expression of sadness,
applause at a life well lived.

made me think?
do apes clap?
As humans we clap for good things, did we ever clap for bad things?
Do babies clap if we dont teach it too them?
Did we start to clap to make sound then realised we could make rythm?
Dont have an answer sorry, but looking forward to others
