I think a ratio of 1:1200 is a bit steep as I reckon there are whole commnities in developing countries who do not own any paper clips, ths is where it evens out

That's a tough one.
What about paperclips that I've bent out of shape? Do they count?
On my desk right now I have a packet of 100, I think I've used 4. And on my desk at work it's a similar story. So for me there's a 1:200 ratio of person to paperclip.

Memo to Clippy Joe -
My ratio is 1:200, not 1:1200.

i think there are more paperclips than people - i've just taken a quick look in my supplies cupboard and i have 10 boxes of small paperclips which have 1000 per box, 15 boxes of large paperclips at 1000 per box, 3 boxes of giant paperclips at 1000 per box and a whole lot more on my actual desk.

A lot of offices have a hell of a lot more than this and then you have the numbers in peoples homes, huge quantities in the shops, wholesalers etc etc etc

how would you know? when does a paperclip stop becoming a paperclip , if for example it is used out of the remit it was manufactured for, would you still call it a paperclip?or would it just become a very handy peice of wire. LF
