In a car battery the liquid substance used in the cells is a substance known as electrolyte. Electrolyte is a combination of sulfuric acid and distilled water that reacts with the plates in the battery to cause an electrical reaction.
So whatever you want Acid for electrolyte is probably not ideal as it is really quite week.
You could concentrate the solution by boiling off some of the water as water has a lower boiling temperature (100 °C compared to 337°C for sulfuric acid), this will get you closer to the original strength of the sulfuric acid.

would it not be simpler however to just buy some strong acid?

Crack it open and tip it upside down, that should do it.

It'll seriously hurt you though.
